RIDER ACADEMY

MSF BASIC RIDERCOURSE - Licensing

The Basic RiderCourse is intended for those with little or no experience, or for any rider who has missed the opportunity to take formal motorcycle rider education. This hands-on, learner-centered, step-by-step course teaches everything from the ground up.

Prior to your scheduled riding days, classroom instruction takes place via an electronic course covering risk awareness, protective gear, motorcycle controls, riding skills, and street strategies. This eCourse takes approximately 5 hours and can be completed in multiple sessions or all at once, on a smartphone, computer or tablet. Outdoor range exercises are conducted on our training motorcycles (all 310cc or smaller) in a controlled environment, where students get hands-on experience and personal, professional coaching.

Total instructional time is 11-12 hours, including a skill evaluation at the end of the course. Students who have already obtained their motorcycle permit and meet evaluation standards (pass the riding test) are waived from having to take the on-cycle skill test required by the state for a motorcycle endorsement. Students meeting evaluation standards also receive a MSF completion card good for discounts on gear, motorcycles and insurance.

Student Requirements

As a minimum, each student must be able to ride and balance a bicycle.

Each student MUST provide and wear the following required safety gear:

  • Helmet - DOT approved.
  • Eye protection. Glasses (prescription, not fashion), sunglasses or safety glasses.
  • Long sleeves in the form of a jacket, sweatshirt or a long sleeve t-shirt. Think layers. If it is hot you will want to take your jacket or sweatshirt off and you need to have long sleeves for a variety of reasons.
  • Gloves. Full-finger leather or riding gloves. Absolutely NO fingerless gloves allowed.
  • Pants that aren’t loose around the ankles. Leave your bell bottoms at home.
  • Over the ankle footwear. You need ankle support when you are riding. Sturdy boots, over the ankles and lace-ups are acceptable. Open toed sandals are expressly PROHIBITED.
  • Raingear, just in case. We call it rain insurance.
  • Water bottle, granola bars, etc.
  • We are the only MN school with indoor bathrooms and an indoor lounge to relax out of the heat or rain, or both!

We offer more than a class, we offer an experience!
